Session 1 – September 20, 2021

Managing the Process of Research Writing

The workshop will redefine the common understanding of research writing as product, i.e. the text of a journal article in print, by highlighting the iterative stages of investigating, drafting and revising involved. Having introduced the concept of writing as a process that can be planned and controlled, the session will examine further elements of writing behaviour management aimed at maximising research productivity.

Session 2 – September 21, 2021

Strategies for Publications in High-Ranking International Journals

The workshop will share successful strategies in securing publication opportunities in international Higher Education journals. Using leading journals – Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education, the Journal of Tertiary Education and Management, and Studies in Higher Education– as models, the session will discuss the stages of selection, review and publication of a journal article, and make explicit the often unspoken rules of the publication process. Specific research and networking strategies will be suggested to the participants in the session.

Session 3 – September 22, 2021

Using Theory to Frame Education Research

The workshop will discuss the importance of theory to enhance the depth of analysis in qualitative and quantitative research. It will encourage participants to consider a series of different lenses through which to theorise their research in their written outputs, and will also focus on the importance of alignment and internal consistency in written outputs.

Session 4 –September 23, 2021

Crafting a Research Argument (1): Abstract Writing

A sample of abstracts from published journal articles and successful grant proposals will be analysed for structure. The session will also discuss the use of abstracts as generative tools that can help to elicit research focus and predict contribution. Participants will be invited to write a speculative abstract for a project they plan to pursue, or are currently conducting, which will then be extended into individual research plans.

Session 5 – September 24, 2021

Crafting a Research Argument (2): Framing a Unique Contribution

The problem of framing and signposting a research argument presents a critical challenge for ECRs in their effort to obtain funding and secure publications. This workshop will focus on journal articles’ Introductions and Conclusions as the sections where the unique perspective and contribution of a researcher are made.

Session 6 – September 27, 2021

Crafting a Research Argument (3): Writing a Literature Review

Engaging with scholarly literature is an indispensable skill which ECRs must perfect to be able to showcase the originality and impact of their work. In this workshop, participants will gain a nuanced understanding of authorial stance and voice, and will have the opportunity to practice writing-process and linguistic strategies to master the use of academic sources.

Session 7 – September 28, 2021

Crafting a Research Argument (4): Reporting Findings

Participants in the workshop will analyse samples of Results and Discussion sections from high-ranking journals in the field of Education, to understand the logical structure and cohesive devices used to report research findings. Special attention will be paid to a range of linguistic strategies typically employed to describe findings, as well as to graphic representations of data and their correlation to textual description.

Session 8 – September 29, 2021

Academic Style: Strategies for High-Impact Writing

This workshop will examine a range of stylistic features and textual devices typical of scholarly prose in high-ranking Education journals. Participants will be taught how to analyse and apply advanced coherence and cohesion, as well as narrative and grammatical, strategies in their writing to create a precise, nuanced and critically incisive argument.

Session 9 – September 30, 2021

The Process of Peer Reviewing Explained

Focusing on key aspects of the peer-review process, this workshop will help researchers navigate one of the most challenging stages of writing for publication. Participants will be trained how to critique a journal article, provide constructive feedback to peers and respond to peer feedback. Related topics such as coaching and mentoring academic colleagues will also be touched upon in the session with the view to helping participants to form and sustain long-term professional ties through agreement to form a virtual peer-review college.

Session 10 – October 1, 2021

Developing a Winning Grant Application: The Viable Research Project

This workshop will bring a project management perspective onto the scholarly work of a research writer, highlighting the practical challenges involved in transforming an intellectually sound idea into a viable funding bid application. The participants will be encouraged to think strategically about selecting a suitable funder and matching their expectations, building a strong team of collaborators, managing deadlines and trouble-shooting.
